While sipping my nice and warm Green Tea… feeling calm and peaceful… I just thought of sharing some quick tips as to how we can use meditation or mindfulness in everyday life.
Meditation is a Journey – this is not a quick fix. Every step you take towards it – enlightens us. It adds to more and more understanding, compassion, love, and peace. It is something to experience and enjoy… feel happy about yourself.
Meditation is much easier than people think, because as long as you know what’s going on and you are able to remain in that state without getting distracted, and just noticing and experiencing that is actually mediation.
You can turn any daily activity into a meditation practice. Like washing the dishes, brushing your teeth, ironing your clothes, preparing your meal, working on your presentation.
For example – you are driving and someone keeps honking. He just cuts across and overtakes you. What do you do? You get angry and start abusing that person. Instead just notice the act, don’t be judgmental, don’t comment anything, just stay calm.
Why do you need to do so? Tell me one thing. What did you achieve by getting angry? Nothing – you just got more frustrated. You already know that there is traffic and by getting angry you spoilt your own mood. What happened to that person? Nothing – he just passed by. Who’s temper got spoilt – YOURS!
How do you know that the person was wrong? Probably, he is in a hurry because of some emergency. Don’t be judgmental. Just notice and leave it there.
Let’s look at 3 tips to incorporate meditation in everyday life:
1. STOP Thinking – Notice Instead
The above example explains very well that how noticing and stop thinking would help us. Be a student. Have a learner’s mindset. Be open. Don’t think, don’t judge, don’t label.
2. FOLLOW a healthy lifestyle
Eat food that fuels peak performance. Eat food which is beneficial for your health. Add more fruits and salads to your diet. Drink atleast 5 to 6 litres of water everyday. Exercise and get enough sleep. A healthy lifestyle automatically contributes to effective and beneficial meditation.
3. FOCUS on your breathing
Whenever you have nagging thoughts or thoughts that are taking you away from the present moment, focus on your breathing. For a minute or two, feel and hear yourself breathing. This will help you get your focus back to the present moment.
Incorporating mediation in everyday life, helps to be more relaxed and comfortable. It helps to increase your productivity. It helps to increase your focus and confidence levels too.
